California Chrome Co-Owner Apologizes for Belmont Rant (Video)

The co-owner of California Chrome has profusely apologized for his televised rant after his horse lost the Belmont Stakes on Saturday.

Appearing on Monday’s Good Morning America, an emotional Steve Coburn said he was “very ashamed” as he tried to make amends for what he said.

Coburn ranted to a TV reporter after his horse lost the race, and thus the Triple Crown, on Saturday, complaining about a system that allows horses to run at Belmont without having participated in the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness Stakes. The Belmont winner, Tonalist, had run neither.

On GMA, Coburn apologized to “everyone associated” with the winning horse, Tonalist.

“They run a beautiful race and the horse that won the race, they deserved that. I did not mean to take anything away from them,” Coburn said.

Coburn also apologized to fans of the sport who’d followed California Chrome’s journey.

“I need to apologize to the world and America,” he said. “Our fans that have written us and given us so much support, I apologize. I sincerely apologize.”

During these remarks, it seemed as if Coburn was starting to cry.

The co-owner also apologized to his business partner and his wife, who tried to calm her husband down during his rant.

“I just wanted so much for this horse to win the Triple Crown for the people of America, and I was very emotional, very emotional,” Coburn said.

The co-owner, who noted that California Chrome will be able to race again, said he’s learning from his experience at Belmont and will “do better.”
