Netflix has signed a deal with CBS Studios for worldwide rights to CBS All Access’ upcoming new Star Trek series.
The streaming service will make each episode of the new series available in 188 countries, minus the U.S. and Canada, within 24 hours of its U.S. premiere.
Netflix has also picked up worldwide rights to CBS’ entire Star Trek catalog, acquiring rights for all 727 existing episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise. The rights will be available on Netflix around the world by the end of 2016.
The new Star Trek series will begin production in Toronto this September for a January 2017 debut. The premiere episode will go out on CBS’ main network with all subsequent episodes streaming on CBS All Access, the network’s digital subscription video on demand service. The series will mark the first new Star Trek series since Star Trek: Enterprise went off the air in 2005.
In Canada, Bell Media will take all TV and SVOD rights to the new series, which will be available simultaneously with its U.S. release. Bell has also licensed CBS Studios’ entire Star Trek back catalog.
“Star Trek is one of the most iconic shows in television history and we’re thrilled to partner with CBS to bring the beloved series to Trekkies around the world,” said Sean Carey, vp global television at Netflix in a statement. “The newest chapter of the story promises to continue the rich tradition of adventure and is sure to excite fans everywhere Netflix is available.”
The latest Star Trek film, Justin Lin’s Star Trek Beyond, will have its U.S. premiere at Comic-Con on July 20.
