The network has canceled the Poppy Montgomery starrer after three seasons, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
This marks the second time the procedural from Sony Pictures Television has gotten the ax. CBS passed on bringing the series back for a sophomore run following its standard in-season run in 2011-12. The network then teamed with SPT to revive the series for a short 13-episode second season and moved the drama to the typically lower-rated summer period where the series was able to score solid returns. After the drama ranked as Sunday’s top scripted drama in total viewers last summer, CBS renewed it for a third run for another summer return. Season three ended in September with an average of 6 million total viewers, down about 2.2 million year-over-year.
In the years since it first revived Unforgettable, CBS has refocused its summer strategy to louder and more high-profile fare in a bid to make noise in the traditionally low-rated season. The network teamed with Amblin Television for the Stephen King adaptation Under the Dome and pacted with Amazon for a short second-window to help offset the costs of the pricey summer drama. Last year, CBS added Halle Berry space drama Extant — again for Amblin and teaming with Amazon for a similar second-window agreement — to the roster. Both Dome and Extant were renewed this week for their third and second seasons, respectively.
CBS also recently added the James Patterson adaptation Zoo with a straight-to-series pickup for summer 2015, inking a rich deal with Netflix to help offset those costs. It gave the network three high-profile dramas for summer 2015.
CBS has now made decisions on all four original scripted summer dramas, with Unforgettable joining Southern legal soap Reckless — which hails from sibling studio CBS Television Studios — on the canceled heap.
