CBS’ MacGyver reboot is beefing up its cast.
Sandrine Holt (24, House of Cards) has boarded the remake as a series regular, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
A reimagining of the classic show, CBS’ MacGyver is an action-adventure drama about twentysomething Angus “Mac” MacGyver (Lucas Till), who creates a clandestine organization within the U.S. government where he uses his extraordinary talent for unconventional problem solving and vast scientific knowledge to save lives. Joining his team on high-risk missions around the globe is maverick former CIA agent Jack Dalton (George Eads). At home, MacGyver is entertained by his ambitious roommate, Wilt Bozer (Justin Hires). Under the aegis of the Department of External Services, MacGyver takes on the responsibility of saving the world, armed to the teeth with resourcefulness and little more than bubble gum and a paper clip.
Holt will play Patricia Thornton, an ex-field agent turned director of operations for DXS (Department of External Services). She doesn’t let the title “Boss” stand in her way and is always willing to join the team in the field — meaning that she’s not going to let those under her have all the fun.
Although the first pilot for the remake was good enough to score a series pickup in May, CBS scrapped the original hour, along with several members of the cast. Hires, who starred in CBS’ one-season-and-done Rush Hour remake last season, joined Till and Eads in June.
There have been several major shake-ups behind the scenes as well. The original script was written by R. Scott Gemmill (NCIS: L.A.) but ultimately picked up to pilot with new writers Paul Downs Colaizzo and Brett Mahoney (Code Black). The project now has a third writer attached as Hawaii Five-0’s Peter Lenkov joined the drama when it was picked up to series in May.
James Wan (Mortal Kombat), who signed up to direct the new pilot in June, is also set to exec-produce with his head of production Michael Clear and Henry Winkler, who executive produced the original series, is on board to serve in the same capacity. Lenkov and Craig O’Neill also will exec produce.
Holt’s credits also include Fear the Walking Dead, Mr. Robot, The Art of More, CBS’ Hostages and the film Terminator: Genisys. She is repped by Innovative Artists and Management 360.
MacGyver will air on Fridays this fall, where it will open the night at 8 p.m. for CBS.
