CBS is in the market for a new reality boss. Veteran alternative executive Chris Castallo, who has run the division since 2013, is not renewing his contract.
There is no immediate replacement lined up, but Castallo is said to be sticking around until a replacement is named — or until the September expiration of his current deal. He’s run the network’s reality outfit for nearly four years, but that time has been spent nurturing the current stable, rather than launching new hits. CBS has found no new reality breakout, the latest stab being Hunted, though veterans Survivor and Big Brother continue to drive significant ratings.
Castallo has served as executive vp since being promoted from senior vp — a title he held since joining the network in 2007 — in 2013. Launches during his tenure have been few and far between. CBS is famous for its lack of real estate, and what few openings become available typically go to scripted.
Despite his short time atop the department, Castallo had the second-longest tenure of anyone in broadcast reality next to NBC boss Paul Telegdy. Rob Mills assumed ABC’s top post in 2015, while Fox only named Rob Wade as alternative president in February.
