Supergirl has scored a strong overnight debut audience on Canadian TV.
CBS’ freshman superhero drama with Melissa Benoist as the DC Comics character secured an average 1.7 million viewers (2+) on Monday night on Global Television, according to Numeris overnight data. That’s just behind the 1.8 million overnight premiere audience for ABC’s Quantico, which launched earlier this month on rival CTV.
Global premiered Supergirl at 8:30 p.m. on Monday, and will air the second episode in a regular 8 p.m. timeslot on Mondays, beginning Nov. 2. Supergirl – performing on Global – is a primetime win for parent company Shaw Media after CTV became the top-rated Canadian network on the strength of superhero dramas like The Flash, Gotham and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
CTV parent company Bell Media has had ratings success this season with rookie shows like Quantico, Blindspot and Code Black. Final Numeris data has Quantico as the current top-rated new series this fall with an average audience of 2.3 million viewers.
The Big Bang Theory earlier returned as Canada’s most-watched TV series with 2.8 million total viewers on CTV in all key demos. Shaw picked up Supergirl from Warner Bros. Television during the Los Angeles Screenings in May to join a U.S. series lineup on Global Television that includes The Blacklist, NCIS: New Orleans, Madam Secretary, Elementary, Hawaii Five-0 and The Good Wife.
Oct. 29 3:15 p.m. Updated to include ABC’s Quantico on CTV as having the biggest overnight audience for a new series in Canadian primetime this season.
