Charlie Rose flew across the country to Los Angeles on Tuesday to attend the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour. However, he quickly revealed he had an ulterior motive for his trip: Sean Penn.
“I went to see him soon after I arrived, and we’re planning to do an interview about his experience and what happened to him,” Rose told reporters.
The two-time Oscar-winning actor as been in the news since Saturday, when it was revealed Penn secretly interviewed Joaquín Guzman Loera, the wanted Mexican drug lord known as “El Chapo,” while he was on the run from authorities. The interview was published Saturday by Rolling Stone, and an investigation into Penn has since been launched regarding the sit-down.
“I have a thousand questions for Sean and all the other people involved,” said Rose. “It’s a remarkable story.”
It is still unclear when exactly Rose will sit down with Penn and when the interview will air. “I’m definitely doing an interview. At what time, I don’t know yet. That obviously has to do with issues,” said Rose. “I’d hope sooner rather than later. I’m prepared to do it whenever I get the green light from him and his lawyers.”
Other than an email to the Associated Press saying he has nothing to hide regarding the interview, Penn has not yet spoken out about his interview with the drug lord. “I’ve known [Penn] for a long time,” said Rose. “I don’t think he will be doing any other interviews until we sit down.”
Another coup for CBS is Gayle King’s upcoming live interview with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 7 (the network is home to the Super Bowl this year). Although the President has regularly sat down for interviews on football’s biggest day of the year, this will mark the first time he will be joined by his wife.
Last year, Today‘s Savannah Guthrie spoke with Obama. In 2014, the interview was conducted by Bill O’Reilly. This marks the President’s last Super Bowl in office ahead of November’s election.
