Donald Trump, Derek Jeter Welcome Charlie Rose Back to ‘CBS This Morning’

Charlie Rose made a triumphant return to CBS This Morning on Monday, more than a month after undergoing heart-valve replacement surgery.

Wearing a bright purple tie, the veteran anchor looked refreshed and healthy during the morning show.

He was even welcomed back by prerecorded messages from Donald Trump and Derek Jeter. Trump’s video played at the top of the show, with the president saying, “Charlie welcome back. We all missed you.”

After welcoming viewers to the program, Rose joked about Trump’s message, “Are you sure he’s talking about me?”

Trump wasn’t the only member of his administration welcoming Rose back, with Kellyanne Conway also sending a “Welcome Back” tweet.

Rose seemed especially excited to be back on the CBS morning show with his co-hosts Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell and the program’s many staffers.

And he said not only did he get a clean bill of health, but also the surgeons told him things went even better than expected.

“The interesting thing is that the surgeons say to me, ‘Everything, everything that we wanted to do came out even better than we expected. So we’re very excited about what it’s going to be in terms of how you can perform,'” Rose said.

Jeter later welcomed Rose back with a video message that appeared to have been taped when the former Yankee appeared as a guest on the CBS morning show. In his greeting, Jeter said he missed seeing Rose and joked that he heard Rose was waiting to come back until after he’d left.

Rose also thanked his colleagues and viewers for supporting him in his recovery. He said he appreciated King, O’Donnell and Anthony Mason, who’d filled in for Rose at the anchor desk, keeping people informed about his health. In particular, Rose said that the picture King shared of the two of them together shortly after his surgery “made a lot of difference.”

Rose recalled, “People said, ‘He ain’t gone.'”

He also thanked “the people out there, who were enormous in terms of what they sent to me, saying we’re thinking about you, we care about you, we miss you — all of that. I told them to stay close and they did.”

On Feb. 9, Rose had a heart valve, installed in 2002, replaced. The original valve had been expected to last 15 years and his doctor had noticed it was leaking. Rose said on the air, as he was announcing that he was taking some time off for the surgery, that the timing was his choice.
