Hulu is expanding its comedy lens.
The Disney-backed streamer is teaming with stand-up comedian Chris Estrada for a scripted comedy series inspired by his life called Punk Ass Bitch. Estrada will star, write and exec produce the comedy, which is currently in the development stage. The potential series will see Estrada re-team with Corporate creators Pat Bishop, Jake Weisman and Matt Ingebretson after the comedian appeared in one episode of the Comedy Central favorite.
Punk Ass Bitch hails from Disney’s ABC Signature. Former Black-ish showrunner Jonathan Groff will supervise the comedy, which also counts Fred Armisen as an exec producer. Bishop, Weisman and Ingebretson will all serve as showrunners and writers, with the former attached to direct the potential pilot.
The comedy centers on Julio Lopez (Estrada), a punk ass bitch with a heart of gold who goes out of his way to help everyone but himself. Inspired by the life and stand-up comedy Estrada, the half-hour comedy explores Julio’s attempts to better his community, overcome his codependency issues with his family and navigate working-class life in South Central Los Angeles.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Estrada was among Time Out L.A.’s top 10 comics to watch in 2018. A year later, Comedy Central featured him as one of its Up Next Comedians at Clusterfest. He’s repped by UTA.
The news arrives as Hulu recently announced that Aidy Bryant comedy Shrill will wrap its run this year. The streamer’s scripted comedy roster also boasts Ramy, Amy Schumer’s upcoming Life & Beth (due this year), Pen15 and Woke, among others.
