The comedian hosted the sketch show Saturday, and he opened with a stand-up routine that contained jokes about the Boston Marathon, 9/11 and the overcommercialization of Christmas.
“I love the people [in Boston], but that was probably the most frightening, sadistic terrorist attack ever,” he said, referring to the April 2013 bombings that killed three people. “Just think about it — 26 miles!” Rock joked. “You’ve been training for a year, you finally get to the finish line and somebody yells, ‘RUN!’ ”
Rock also talked about NYC’s Freedom Tower, which he said should be renamed the “Never Going in There Tower,” since he found it foolish to build a skyscraper on the same site of the previous tragedy. “Who’s the corporate sponsor, Target?” he asked.
The Top Five star was immediately trending on Twitter during the performance, with some people commenting that he shouldn’t be making light of events in which lives were lost.
