USA’s big reality bet just got bigger.
The NBCUniversal-owned cable network has ordered a 12-episode third season of its breakout unscripted franchise, Chrisley Knows Best, along with a half-hour holiday special to air in December. The unfiltered comedy centers on Atlanta-based “Patriarch of Perfection” Todd Chrisley, and his “colorful clan,” which includes his wife, five children and two grandchildren.
To date, the entry has proven a strong performer both in viewers and in buzz for the drama-heavy network, scoring its highest ratings in all key demos for the season two premiere. Chrisley drew 1.3 million viewers in the 18-49 demo and 2.3 million total viewers, up 61 percent and 76 percent over the season one premiere, respectively, for its 10 p.m. bow in mid-October. At 10:30 pm, the series lured 2.2 million.
“Viewers have embraced the Chrisleys for their witty one-liners, laugh-out-loud moments and heartfelt everyday situations. This family has made an indelible imprint on pop culture, and we’re excited to continue the entertaining journey with them in season three,” said USA network president Chris McCumber, who remains in search of a popular unscripted companion for the half-hour show. Previous reality efforts, including The Moment and competition series Summer Camp, failed to draw viewers.
The move comes as USA looks to narrow its scripted focus back to drama, the genre that has propelled it to No. 1 for several years. In doing so, the net will retreat from its ambitious comedy plans, which began in earnest with the launch of off-net half-hour Modern Family.
Chrisley is produced by Maverick TV and All3Media America. Adam Greener, Jim Sayer, Eli Holzman and Stephen Lambert serve as executive producers, with Annie Kate Pons joining them as a supervising producer.
