Clara McGregor, daughter of Ewan McGregor, and indie producer Black Magic are set to adapt Goddess, a novel about a swashbuckling female opera singer from 17th century Versailles.
McGregor’s Deux Dames Entertainment and Greg Lauritano’s Black Magic optioned the historical female fencing novel and plan a limited series with a showrunner yet to be attached to the project. Kelly Gardiner’s book fictionalizes the true life of feisty Julie d’Aubigny, known as Mademoiselle de Maupin, a bisexual star of Louis IV’s court and the Paris Opera who took lovers from among Europe’s most powerful men and women.
McGregor and Vera Bulder launched Deux Dames to produce and develop female-driven stories for the screen. Bulder uncovered the story of d’Aubigny and Gardiner’s novel and brought the project to Deux Dames and Black Magic.
Originally from Amsterdam, she was born into a theater family and attended acting school in Rotterdam. Before moving to New York, Bulder appeared in Dutch films and plays and has appeared in indie films since.
Greg Lauritano of Black Magic and Bulder and McGregor are also producing a feature about a daughter who is forced into a road trip with her estranged father as he drives her to rehab, with Killer Films and Ewan McGregor executive producing.
Clara McGregor recently starred in Jessica Kavana Dornbusch’s Reefa and Eva Dolezalova’s short film Maestro. She also co-produced and played a supporting role in The Birthday Cake, which releases later this year.
Black Magic recently produced Brian Petsos’ Big Gold Brick, starring Andy Garcia, Emory Cohen, Megan Fox, Lucy Hale and Oscar Isaac, and Jesse Harris’ Borrego, also starring Hale.
McGregor is repped by Aperture Talent and Authentic. Bulder is repped by Luber Roklin Entertainment. Lauritano is repped by John Michael Murray at Behr Abramson Levy.
