Comedy Central is betting big on the broads.
The network announced Wednesday that it was renewing Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer’s Broad City for both a fourth and fifth season. Making the bet that much bigger, it’s also greenlighting Time Traveling Bong, a three-episode limited series from Glazer and her Broad City co-exec producers Paul W. Downs and Lucia Aniello. The latter is set to debut April 20th, following the third-season finale of Broad, and will rollout over three consecutive nights.
The news comes a month and a half before the third season of the cult series is set to begin. Though Broad City is hardly a massive ratings driver, the series has delivered raves (it landed on The New York Times, Time and Rolling Stone’s “Best TV Shows of 2015” lists) and brought a sense of “hip” to Comedy Central, both key in an increasingly competitive landscape. The Amy Poehler-produced odd couple comedy stars Downs, Hannibal Buress, Arturo Castro, John Gemberling and Chris Gethard alongside creators and leads Jacobson and Glazer.
Time Traveling Bong, for its part, centers on two cousins, played by Glazer and Downs, who discover a time traveling bong and ride high as they blaze through time. Their buzz is killed when the bong breaks and the cousins are forced to bounce around the space time continuum, learning to appreciate there’s no time like the present. Joining the trio as exec producers are 3 Arts’ Dave Becky and Sam Reich.
