After pulling the rug out from under fans in the series’ eighth-season finale, Bones will not keep its central duo’s engagement canceled for long. Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) will tie the knot in the next year.
“We’re not toying with you,” creator and executive producer Hart Hanson told fans gathered in Ballroom 20 at Comic-Con. “They will get married this season.”
Those viewers have every reason to be skeptical; the last episode saw Booth re-neg on his accepted proposal. To make up for that, Boreanaz got down on one knee Friday to propose to Deschanel onstage.
The panel was filled with quite a few antics. With Hanson playing narrator, the two stars read through much of the finale script playing each other’s characters. When time came to talk about where the upcoming return finds the damaged duo, it was director and executive producer Ian Toynton who did the talking.
“The relationship between Brennan and Booth will be slightly different,” said Toynton. “We’re three months from the last time we saw them, and the relationship has been pushed to a different place.”
Teasing a bit of upcoming casting, a priest from Booth’s past, Hanson says his lead will need a confidante. “Everybody is mad at Booth for reneging on the engagement,” said Hanson. “He doesn’t have anyone he can talk to, so he seeks out a man he used to talk to.”
Bones kicks off filming on its ninth season Tuesday. Hanson says the episode is titled “The Secret in the Proposal,” so read into that what you will.
