The worlds of Criminal Minds and the Beyond Borders spinoff are about to collide.
Beyond Borders star Daniel Henney has joined the cast of the flagship series as a series regular for season 13.
Henney will reprise his role as Special Agent Matt Simmons, which he played for both seasons of the spinoff before it was canceled in May. Beyond Borders, which returned midseason and aired behind the mothership, averaged a low 1.2 rating among adults 18-49 with delayed viewing factored in.
Special Agent Simmons comes onboard the Behavioral Analysis Unit, after having worked with the team in the past, including helping with the release of Dr. Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) when he was arrested in Mexico last season.
Henney’s addition comes after the departure of Damon Gupton, who joined the CBS drama in the midst of season 12 following the abrupt exit of Thomas Gibson, who was let go from the show after an alleged altercation on set with a writer.
The returning cast for season 13 also includes Joe Mantegna, Paget Brewster, Gubler, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler, Kirsten Vangsness and Adam Rodriguez. ABC Studios and CBS TV Studios co-produce the series.
Henney’s credits include the films Big Hero 6 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the CBS series Hawaii Five-0 and NCIS: Los Angeles.
Criminal Minds is set to return Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
