Congressman Dan Crenshaw called Pete Davidson after he found out about the disturbing social media message the Saturday Night Live comic posted over the weekend.
Talking with KPRC2 Houston, the former Navy SEAL, who lost an eye in an IED blast while serving in Afghanistan, said he called and spoke with Davidson, who made headlines months back when Davidson made fun of Crenshaw during a “Weekend Update” segment. Davidson later apologized and the two buried the hatchet.
“I talked to him personally [Sunday],” Crenshaw said. “We don’t go back very far. We’re not good friends. But I think he appreciated hearing from me. I told him everyone had a purpose in this world. God put you here for a reason. It’s your job to find that purpose. And you should live that way.”
Davidson caused panic among his fans over the weekend when he posted a message to his Instagram account in which he said “I really don’t want to be on this Earth anymore. I’m doing my best to stay here for you but I actually don’t know how much longer I can last. All I’ve ever tried to do was help people.” He then deleted his entire account.
The post was taken so seriously, New York City police got involved and conducted a welfare check on Davidson. The comic was found to be safe and the investigation concluded.
“‘Know you have value,'” Crenshaw said he told Davidson. “Especially a guy like that: Sometimes he makes people laugh. Sometimes he makes people mad. But he makes people laugh a lot. It was a good conversation.”
Davidson briefly appeared on the Dec. 15 episode of SNL to introduce musical guest Miley Cyrus before her second performance near the end of the episode.
