Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are taking on another ambitious project.
The duo will team with The Terror: Infamy showrunner Alexander Woo to adapt Liu Cixin’s Hugo Award-winning novel trilogy The Three-Body Problem for Netflix (all three have overall deals at the streamer). Netflix has given a series order to the project, which also counts Rian Johnson, Rosamund Pike and Brad Pitt’s Plan B among its executive producers.
Cixin and Ken Liu, who wrote the English-language translation to the first and third novels, will be consulting producers.
“David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo have experience tackling ambitious sagas over time and space,” said Peter Friedlander, vp original series at Netflix. “Rian Johnson and [producing partner] Ram Bergman have long dazzled fans with thrilling and mind-bending epics. They are all fierce advocates of The Three-Body Problem. As ardent fans, it was especially meaningful to us to get the support of Liu Cixin who created this expansive universe. We all share the same goal: to pay homage to this incredible story and take members on the adventure of a lifetime.”
The Three-Body Problem trilogy tells the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization. “Liu Cixin’s trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe,” said Benioff and Weiss. “We look forward to spending the next years of our lives bringing this to life for audiences around the world.”
Said Woo, “It’s a privilege to be adapting one of the great masterpieces of Chinese science-fiction. The Three-Body Problem trilogy combines so many things I love: rich, multi-layered characters and true existential stakes — all told as an elegant and deeply human allegory. I’m thrilled to kick off my partnership with Netflix with this accomplished creative team.”
Netflix acquired rights to produce an English-language adaptation of the trilogy from rights holders The Three-Body Universe and Yoozoo Group.
“I have the greatest respect for and faith in the creative team adapting The Three-Body Problem for television audiences,” said author Cixin. “I set out to tell a story that transcends time and the confines of nations, cultures and races; one that compels us to consider the fate of humankind as a whole. It is a great honor as an author to see this unique sci-fi concept travel and gain fandom across the globe and I am excited for new and existing fans all over the world to discover the story on Netflix.”
The Three-Body Problem is the first series order for Benioff and Weiss since they signed a nine-figure overall deal at Netflix in 2019. Woo, a veteran of True Blood and WGN America’s Manhattan, signed with the streamer earlier in the year.
Benioff, Weiss and Woo will executive produce with Johnson, Bergman and Nena Rodrigue for T Street Productions; Lin Qi, chairman of rights holders Yoozoo Group and The Three-Body Universe, and Zhao Jilong, vp of The Three-Body Universe; Plan B Entertainment; and Rosamund Pike and Robie Uniacke for Primitive Streak.
The Three-Body Problem joins a roster of genre series at Netflix that includes hits like Stranger Things and The Witcher, along with The Haunting, Another Life, Locke & Key and Warrior Nun, among others.
