David Letterman Sets Late Night Return on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’

David Letterman is returning to late night for one night only.

The longtime Late Show host is set to appear as a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live later in October, it was announced Wednesday.

The appearance is part of a week-long stint of shows Kimmel will tape from Brooklyn Oct. 16-20.

Additionally, Letterman’s longtime band leader Paul Shaffer will appear, sitting in with Kimmel’s house band, Cleto and the Cletones. Shaffer will sit in for all five shows, which will be taped in front of a live studio audience at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Howard Gilman Opera House. 

Other guests for Kimmel’s “Back to Brooklyn” week include Howard Stern, Billy Joel, Tracy Morgan and Amy Schumer. Musical guests include Joel, LCD Soundsystem, Cardi B and a special performance from the Tidal X show at Barclays Center.

Letterman is poised to receive the Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in November.

Kimmel has frequently spoken about his admiration for Letterman throughout his career. In a 2016 interview with The Hollywood Reporter pegged to Kimmel’s Emmys hosting stint, he also praised Letterman for the support he had received from his idol in recent years.

“I just think that he had an awareness of how much he meant to me and he knew that his kindness would go a long way and if he was anything other than that, I would be devastated,” he said. “So he really was very nice to me; I think mostly because he knew I needed that.”

Kimmel went on to reveal that Letterman sent him a large box of his old ties he wore on the Late Show shortly after the stepped down from the show, which has since been taken over by Stephen Colbert.

“And I did wear one of his ties on the show,” he said. “They are long ties, by the way, they’re hard for me. I really have to tuck them in. But I did wear one of his ties and I was quite delighted. In fact on my first show, I was wearing a Late Night With David Letterman T-shirt under my clothes.”

This is Letterman’s second appearance on Kimmel’s show, the first being in 2012. His more recent late-night appearances include Late Night With Jimmy Fallon in 2013 and The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in 2014. However, Letterman hasn’t popped up in late night since leaving CBS, instead opting to appear on shows like Morning Joe and Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

Letterman will next headline his own interview show at Netflix, which is set to debut in 2018.

Kimmel’s trip to Brooklyn comes after weeks of headline-making monologues on everything from universal healthcare to the recent mass shooting in Las Vegas, his hometown. The former was brought on after Kimmel’s newborn son was diagnosed with a heart defect and forced to undergo emergency surgery. Thankfully, he told THR in August that his son Billy is “doing great.”
