Welcome to The Hollywood Reporter‘s weekly DC TV Watch, a rundown of all things DC Comics on TV. Every Friday, we round up the major twists, epic fights, new mysteries and anything else that goes down on The CW’s Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl and Black Lightning and Fox’s Gotham. While all the DC TV shows are gearing up for their fall returns, THR breaks down the latest teasers and castings.
Guess who’s back | It’s hardly a surprise that The Flash‘s new season four trailer reveals that Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) will return to Central City. You can’t have a show called The Flash without, well, the Flash. But based on the new footage, the scarlet speedster might not be returning to Team Flash the same man as the one who willingly walked into the Speed Force, sacrificing his life and happiness to save everyone else. When Iris (Candice Patton) welcomes her fiance home, the blank look in his eyes is clear: He might not remember her or anyone or anything from his old life. So is the Flash really back? Or is it just the shell of Barry? What happened to him in the Speed Force? How long was his absence for him vs. how long was it in the real world? Is he really going to have that questionable facial hair all season? So many questions.
Team Flash’s secret weapon | While Iris will be doing her best to bring back the man she fell in love with, maybe it’s Cisco (Carlos Valdes) who will be the key to cracking the Barry mystery. Watching him dote over his shell of a best friend with promises of a new suit that needs to be taken out for a spin in an almost creepy-cheerful way, it’s clear that Cisco isn’t going to let Barry stay out of commission for long. And it also looks like Iris might have too much on her plate already with that samurai villain taking her for an impromptu flight anyway, so it’s time for Cisco to step up to the plate.

The death of Kara Danvers | As the Supergirl showrunners revealed at Comic-Con, Kara (Melissa Benoist) is turning her back on her humanity this season and fully embracing life as Supergirl, the new trailer for season three begins on quite the ominous note as Kara officially declares, “I tried to be Kara Danvers for 15 years, but I’m not supposed to be her. What makes me me, is Supergirl.” And it looks like that decision is going to drive a wedge between former friends Kara and Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath). The mogul can tell that Kara is lying to her, but will she dig deep enough to uncover the truth about her friend? Is this the beginning of a new Super rivalry between a Luthor and a Kryptonian? Or will Lena break the cycle and be able to look past Kara’s lies and stay her friend?
The first villain | Supergirl’s first nemesis of season three is debuted in the new trailer, and he is none other than Robert DuBois, aka DC Comics baddie Bloodsport. In the comics, DuBois is a coward, having ditched his draft notice for the Vietnam War and fled to Canada instead. His brother took his place and ended up a quadriplegic, which drove DuBois insane. Thanks to a little biomechanical upgrade from Lex Luthor, DuBois was later able to summon any weapon he could imagine into his hands, including kryptonite weapons. Luthor obviously meant for DuBois to take down Superman, but due to his complete mental instability, he couldn’t be controlled. He became a weapon of mass destruction with no care of innocent blood being spilled. Based on the glimpse of DuBois aka Bloodsport in the trailer, he’s sporting military fatigues and wielding some kind of electrical weapon, so Supergirl might be following the comic book source material closely. Legends of Tomorrow
A lifetime of mistakes to fix | Legends of Tomorrow is pretty near impossible to predict when it comes to storylines, characters or even where in time the Waverider will end up next. And as expected, the new trailer for season three does little to reveal what fans can expect from this year besides a whole lot of zany adventures now that the Legends have to fix the timeline they broke. Between Julius Caesar showing up to block Mick Rory’s (Dominic Purcell) sun in Aruba to the rogue T-Rex laying waste to a city skyline to the Legends not getting the recognition they deserve from the new, shadowy organization taking them out, the new footage promises another season full of leaning in to the comedy that made season two such a hit.
