TBS is hopping on board for another season of The Detour.
The Turner-owned cable network has renewed the family sitcom for a third season. The news comes ahead of the second-season finale, which airs Tuesday night.
The Detour is created by Jason Jones and his wife, Full Frontal host Samantha Bee, with Jones starring in the titular role.
The comedy centers on a family of four led by Nate (Jones) and his wife, Robin (Natalie Zea). At the opening of the second season, Nate, pursuing a promising job opportunity, moved the family to New York City for a fresh start. Despite questionable parenting and terrible decisions, the love the Parkers have for each other will keep the family intact as they endure another disastrous adventure.
Looking ahead at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in July, TBS president Kevin Reilly said that the plan is The Detour to “reset every season with some large premise that then plays out.”
Bee made an appearance in the second season, along with a roster of special guests, including James Cromwell, John Oliver, Laura Benanti, Jeffrey Vincent Parise and Max Casella.
“I hear from so many people who love The Detour, even my hard-core comedy friends,” said Thom Hinkle, senior vp original programming for TBS. “Season two has been so smart, hilarious and wrong. And from the early nuggets I’ve gotten from Jason and Sam, season three is going to be even more effed up.”
The Detour is part of TBS’ major programming overhaul since Reilly came onboard as president of the cabler and sister network TNT in November 2014. Following Reilly’s arrival, TBS moved away from multicam comedies like Men at Work and towards buzzy single-cam entries like The Detour, as well as Angie Tribeca, Search Party, Wrecked and People of Earth — the latter which stars another Daily Show alum, Wyatt Cenac.
The Detour airs a new episode Tuesday at 10 p.m., followed by the supersized season finale.
