[WARNING: Major spoilers ahead from Sunday’s “This is the Way the World Ends” episode. Read at your own risk!]
Showtime’s Dexter wrapped its sixth season Sunday with two massive shockers.
In a religious-themed season that Dexter (Michael C. Hall) figure out that it doesn’t matter whether his son, Harrison, is a lion or a lamb, it was his sister, Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) who learned the most.
STORY: ‘Dexter’s’ Jennifer Carpenter: Deb is Honoring ‘What’s True for Her’
In the final few minutes of the finale, Deb – who assigned her brother to go back for a final sweep of the church in which Travis (Colin Hanks) set up shop – walks in to the crime scene just in time to witness Dexter plunging a sword into Travis, who is bound on his table.
Translation: Deb now knows that her brother is a killer!
But wait, there’s more: After (finally) getting some positive feedback from LaGuerta (Lauren Velez), Deb opts to take her boss’ advice and take control of her life. Realizing that her instincts are spot-on when it comes to work, she takes the advice to heart and returns to therapy where she confesses that she’s in love with her brother.
“I don’t think he understood that I’m in love with him but I said the actual words,” Deb tells her. “I don’t know what the f— it means. Every man I’ve ever loved makes sense. I’ve always been looking for someone like Dexter or the opposite of Dexter as away to avoid fact I’m in love with him. It’s clear to me now and I want it to be clear to him, I want him to understand.”
She follows her therapist’s suggestions and heads off to the church to profess her romantic feelings for her brother by adoption and finds him methodically killing the serial murderer Miami Metro has been on the hunt for.
STORY: ‘Dexter’ Finale Preview: What’s the ‘Big Ticking Bomb in the Background’?
Dexter executive producer Sara Colleton told The Hollywood Reporter that the finale would set up the final two seasons of the Showtime drama and that Deb’s growth over the series has been tantamount in setting the table for how the series ultimately ends.
“We want to lay the groundwork to have the most interesting way into examining how Deb will react,” Colleton told THR, citing Deb letting Lumen escape in last year’s finale as an example of the character’s deeper complexities. “If we hadn’t evolved Deb, then there could only be one reaction, which is horror and arrest, and end of story, which indeed may be the case. It just allows us to have a more complicated character who has to deal with it in a more nuanced way.”
So what did you think of Sunday’s Dexter finale? How do you think Deb will react to Dexter’s Dark Passenger? How do you think Dexter will respond to Deb’s news? Listen to Dexter showrunner Scott Buck break down the finale and what’s to come in the show’s final two seasons in the video below.
