More and more TV shows are hitting the big screen (see: Veronica Mars, Entourage), but don’t expect to see Doctor Who join that list anytime soon.
“What are we going to do? Shut down for a year and make a movie?” executive producer Steven Moffat said at the Television Critics Association summer press tour Friday. “Does everyone really want that? One movie instead of a whole series?”
Although Moffat admitted it would be up to the BBC and not him, he voiced his strong resistance to the idea of a potential movie starring an actor other than Peter Capaldi as the Doctor.

“I think that would just be incredibly damaging to the franchise,” he said. “I’m totally in the Capaldi camp.”
Capaldi, who appeared via satellite along with co-star Jenna Coleman, wraps production on his second season as the Doctor in September. Although he’s still relatively new to the job, he and Moffat yielded a question about how long he will stay in the role — a question that elicited a chuckle from Moffat.
“Peter is going to play the part for the rest of time,” joked Moffat. “It’s in his contract.”
“I don’t look at the small print,” added Capaldi. “Certainly ’till the end of September.”

Moffat was (slightly) more forthcoming about who Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams will play on the show.
“Once you see what she’s up to in the show, you’ll appreciate what a clever [idea that was],” said Moffat. “It’s a significant role. We’re not throwing her away.”
Moffat also dispelled rumors that she would be playing a returning character. “She is a brand new character. She is not someone from the Doctor’s past,” said Moffat. “It’s a great part and she’s terrific in it. It will develop in unexpected ways.”
The new season of Doctor Who premieres Sept. 19 on BBC America.
