Emmy and Oscar winner Donald Sutherland will star with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant in HBO’s limited series The Undoing.
Sutherland will play the father of Kidman’s character in the series, based on Jean Hanff Korelitz’s novel You Should Have Known.
The Undoing centers on Grace Sachs (Kidman), a successful therapist living her dream life with a devoted husband (Grant) and a young son in an elite private school in New York. It all comes crashing down when her husband disappears, leaving behind a wave of disturbing revelations. Franklin Renner (Sutherland) is a retired financier and loving grandfather who is tasked with protecting his family when those revelations come to light.
The casting brings Sutherland back to HBO for the first time since the 1995 movie Citizen X, for which he won an Emmy. The veteran actor, who was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2018, is coming off FX’s Trust, where he played J. Paul Getty.
The Undoing comes from Big Little Lies writer David E. Kelley and producer Bruna Papandrea. They are executive producing with Kidman, Per Saari and Susanne Bier (The Night Manager, Bird Box), who is directing all six episodes.
