President Donald Trump is not attending the Super Bowl next month. That is, at least he has “no plans” to currently, White House director of strategic communications Hope Hicks told The Hollywood Reporter.
There was some speculation Trump might attend the big event next month in Houston to cheer on his friend, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.
The Patriots will play the Atlanta Falcons on Feb. 5 in Super Bowl LI.
Both Brady and Trump have said on separate occasions they are friends, with the president vehemently defending the quarterback during the Deflategate scandal.
Brady has tried his best to put some distance between himself and political discussions, telling reporters as the regular season was winding down that he didn’t want to take focus off the team with all the outside noise.
The star quarterback really put his foot down while doing a local Boston radio show after the election, on which he previously promised to reveal who he voted for in the general election. Brady broke that promise and said he was done with the conversation as a whole.
The president also is friends with Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who wrote Trump a note of support around the time of the election. Trump boasted about the letter while stumping in the New England area.
“Our friendship goes back many years, and I think anybody that’s spent more than five minutes with me knows I’m not a political person,” Belichick told reporters in November when pressed about the letter. “The comments are not politically motivated, I have a friendship and loyalty to Donald.”
