Donald Trump launched his first TV ad for his GOP presidential bid on Monday and hours after it was released, the spot was being criticized for being disingenuous.
About 22-seconds into the ad, footage is shown of people running toward a border. During the scene, the voiceover says, “He’ll stop illegal immigration by building a wall on our southern border that Mexico will pay for.”
Turns out, the footage actually shows Moroccans crossing the border into Melilla, according to Politifact. The independent fact-checking journalism website gave the footage a rating of “pants on fire.”
Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks told Politifact she was not aware of the source of the footage in the ad.
A request for additional information from the Trump camp was not immediately returned.
