Disney+’s forthcoming Doogie Howser reboot has found its leading lady.
Former Andi Mack star Peyton Elizabeth Lee will star in the streamer’s update of the Neil Patrick Harris comedy, Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.
Picked up straight to series in September and slated to air this year, Doogie Kameāloha is set in modern-day Hawaii and follows Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha, a mixed-race 16-year-old girl who is juggling a budding medical career and life as a teen. Lee will take on the role of Doogie, stepping into the medical coat that previously helped launch the career of Neil Patrick Harris.
Created by Fresh Off the Boat and How I Met Your Mother grad Kourtney Kang, the series also follows Doogie’s family, including her spitfire Irish mother who is also her supervisor at the hospital, and her “Local Boy” father struggling to accept that his daughter is no longer his little girl.
Steven Bochco and David E. Kelley created the original series. The update is exec produced by Jake Kasdan (who will direct the pilot) and Melvin Mar. Bochco’s widow, Dayna, and son Jesse, also exec produce.
For her part, Lee spent three seasons starring on former Disney Channel favorite Andi Mack. She most recently starred in the Disney+ movie Secret Society of Second-Born Royals, which earned her a Critics Choice Award nomination. Her Disney history also includes a recurring role in animated series The Lion Guard and an episode of ABC’s Stumptown. Her credits also include a recurring role on Shameless. She’s repped by Gersh, Make Good Content and Goodman Genow.
A premiere date for Doogie Kameāloha has not yet been determined.
