Easy is going to close up shop.
Netflix has renewed its Joe Swanberg-created comedic anthology for a third and final season. The individual episodic anthology will wrap its run in 2019. An episode count and specific return date have not yet been determined.
While Netflix — like other streamers — does not release viewership information, Easy has been a favorite among critics. The series has an impressive 97 percent rating on RottenTomatoes.com (and an 81 percent among viewers).
Season two of the comedy, which has explored diverse Chicago characters as they fumble through the modern maze of love, sex, technology and culture, premiered Dec. 1.
The half-hour single-camera comedy series will, in mumblecore fashion, be written, directed and executive produced by Swanberg. He is considered one of a handful of writer-directors most associated with mumblecore, which is a style of low-budget feature filmmaking in which dialogue is improvised and, in some cases, often performed by non-professionals. (Other mumblecore filmmakers include Lena Dunham, the Duplass brothers and Lynn Shelton.)
Season two featured returning stars Kate Micucci, Jane Adams, Zazie Beetz, Michael Chernus, Kiersey Clemons, Evan Jonigkeit, Elizabeth Reaser, Jacqueline Toboni, Dave Franco, Aya Cash and Marc Maron. Cast details about season three have yet to be determined.
Easy becomes the latest series to wrap its run at Netflix as the streaming giant continues to refine its roster of scripted originals amid an $8 billion spending budget. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and A Series of Unfortunate Events are also poised to end their Netflix runs in 2019.
