Glamorous might be the perfect descriptor for both January Jones‘ and Kiernan Shipka‘s dresses at Monday’s Emmys, but when it comes to their hairstyles, the artists behind them were going for a bit more of a modern edge.
Coincidentally, both also debuted new ‘dos. For Jones, it was new bangs that hairstylist Renato Campora cut on Monday, while Shipka went back to blonde and had hair stylist Bridget Brager chop her brunette locks (which were for a role).
Because Campora wanted to create a “modern” look to offset her Prabal Gurung gown, he presented Jones with the idea of cutting slightly uneven bangs. “She was ready to go for it,” he says. To texturize her hair before creating the style, he blow-dried her hair using Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Mega Firm Hold Gel and Heat Protect & Shine Spray.
Campora added more gel in his hand and started twisting the left side of her hair, from above the ear all the way down to her neck. He repeated the twist on the right side, secured the two twists at the nape of Jones’ neck and added Vidal Sassoon Pro Series ColorFinity Finishing Hairspray to keep it in place. As for the fringe, he kept the texture in them for softness and to avoid the severe, fresh-cut look. “It’s quite the modern look,” he says. “We created contrast with the dress and makeup, and it was nice to create the bangs, which is something January has never done before. It’s an editorial look — very feminine and flattering for the face.”
On Jones’ TV daughter, Brager decided to “go for something kind of edgy and classic at the same time — like her dress,” which featured a heavily embellished waistline. “Her hair is short in back now, so i wanted to gather it low at the nape of the neck to give her a really great profile. And a heavier bang — not wispy.”
Brager raked a dab of Garnier Fructis Marvelous Oil Deep Nourish through Shipka’s dry hair to prep and soften it, before blow-drying it briefly. Next she sprayed Garnier Fructis’ brushable Sleek & Shine Hairspray on one-inch sections of hair and curled them with a two-inch barrel iron. She let the bottom sections fall and used five Velcro rollers to let the top sections set, achieving volume.
To create the style, Brager sprayed in Garnier De-Constructed Texture Tease in the roots and then sprayed it throughout the hair before gathering it all in the back and making tiny knots, which she pinned, leaving the ends slightly messy. In front, Shipka’s side-swept bangs “cascaded perfectly across her face.” Brager emulsified a dime-sized amount of Garnier De-Constructed Pixie Play pomade in her hands to warm it, before applying it to the bangs to remove flyways and add shine.
“At big red-carpet events, you often see people pull their hair all the way back. It’s kind of safe and classic,” says Brager. “We wanted an in-between.” Of course both TV mother and daughter continue to push the envelope.
