Admit it: All guys fantasize about being Jon Hamm. So listen up, because Diana Schmidtke, who groomed him for Monday’s Emmys, is sharing a step-by-step to get you that much closer to emulating the beacon of masculinity.
“The inspiration for Jon’s look was a sexy, classic and timeless red carpet look,” says Schmidtke. Mission accomplished. “I took a look at the Tom Ford tux he planned to wear and made my recommendation for the look using that sophisticated silhouette. Everything needs to work together.”
“Jon has a great-looking beard, which requires maintenance,” says the celebrity groomer, who has also worked with George Clooney and Liam Hemsworth. “We used the Norelco 9100 Laser Beard Trimmer to make sure it’s the same length, give it a good shape and make sure it has a beginning and an end — it should end two to four inches down the neck. And the neck should be shaved underneath to make it red-carpet worthy,” she adds. She recommends using American Crew Ultra Gliding Shave Oil with a wet blade for the smoothest shave, and then using a small beard brush to lay the hair down and keep it in place.
As for Hamm’s full head of hair, “it’s a bit longer now, so we wanted to go for something that would balance out the beard and photograph nicely,” says Schmidtke. She wet his hair down with American Crew Alternator, blow-dried it while running her fingers through the sides and back and then used a round brush to add extra volume. After blowing his hair toward the back, away from his face, the she applied a quarter-size amount of American Crew Firm Hold Styling Gel throughout, to it keep in place.
Time to start raiding the wife’s hair tools.
