Modern Family took home the Emmy for outstanding comedy series in a record-tying win.
Frasier previously held sole claim to the comedy record of five wins. Modern Family was created by former Frasier executive producers Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd. The latter is co-showrunner on Modern Family and oversaw Frasier during its Emmy streak.
“It’s a wonder we get to do this for a living,” Levitan said in his acceptance speech. “Modern Family has been a beautiful dream for the last five years and we thank you for not waking us up.”
Backstage, supporting actor in a comedy winner Ty Burrell said he truly didn’t expect to win — or for the show to take home Emmy gold.
“I know that these things don’t really last forever, so I assumed the bloom was off the rose,” Burrell said backstage. “I was very pleasantly surprised, much more so with the show — that we won. I’m thrilled that Emmy voters are still enjoying the show where we’re at right now.”
Co-showrunner Levitan deflected questions about whether the series would have a record-breaking sixth Emmy on its radar. “We’re just fully enjoying this moment. That is it. We never thought we would get here. We’re incredibly honored to have gotten this much from the Academy,” he said.
“We have the deepest respect for not only our fellow nominees, but a show like Frasier, which was so wonderful and some of us even worked on the show. It’s really a wonderful experience. This is a mind-blowing thing. We never imagined this would happen in a million years. We’re grateful and we’re going to just enjoy it now.”
In terms of his career, Burrell said the win — his second win in five nominations — ranks up at the very top. “I didn’t expect to have a steady job in my life, let alone win an award. I’d like this show to last so long that Luke goes bald. Fingers crossed we’re on the air for 30 years.”
