Six of television’s top actresses — Claire Foy, Elisabeth Moss, Robin Wright, Viola Davis, Keri Russell and Evan Rachel Wood — will vie for the title of Best Actress in a Drama Series at the 69th annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
From a woman trying to survive in a dystopian, oppressive society to a prestigious law professor caught in a murder scandal, these characters have resonated with viewers and Emmy voters alike.
Five of the nominees are no stranger to the Emmy Awards. This will be Wright’s fifth nomination for her work in House of Cards and Davis’ third for her role as Annalise Keating in How to Get Away With Murder. Davis won the award in 2015.
Also returning to the Emmys this year is Russell, who received her second consecutive nomination for best actress in a drama series for her role as KGB Agent Elizabeth Jennings in The Americans.
This will also be Wood’s second time at the Emmys as a nominee, following her nom for best supporting actress in a miniseries or movie for Mildred Pierce in 2011, and the first time she is up for best actress in a drama series for her role in HBO’s Westworld.
Mad Men‘s Moss also is returning to the Emmys, this time, with a nomination for her work in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale. She received six noms for Mad Men and another for her role in the miniseries Top of the Lake.
Foy is the only newcomer to the Emmys, having scored her first nom for portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the Netflix series The Crown.
