The man behind the Emmys’ most talked-about acceptance speech, 2018 Oscars director Glenn Weiss, visited Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday night, where he and fiancee Jan Friedlander Svendsen were interviewed by Kimmel while lounging in bed with champagne.
Weiss, who won best directing for a variety special for the Oscars broadcast, proposed to his girlfriend Jan Svendsen onstage at the end of his speech. “You ask why I don’t want to call you my girlfriend,” he said. “That’s because I want to call you my wife.” The proposal soon became the most tweeted-about moment of the night.
“Jan, did you have any idea that Glenn was up to anything?” Kimmel asked the newly-engaged couple.
“As evidenced by my reaction, the answer is I had no idea at all,” Svendsen responded, to which Kimmel said, “You’re going to win the Emmy for best guest performance at next year’s awards.”
When asked if he was worried he’d be played off the stage during his speech, Weiss answered, “Yes. I was actually really worried about that, especially after being in the seat and knowing how those things function.”
Kimmel noted that Weiss seemed nervous before his category came up.
The interview then took a surprising turn, as what appeared to be Weiss and Svendsen relaxing at home was revealed to be a set and the couple was wheeled into the studio before a live audience.
“Go ahead, make love for everybody,” Kimmel joked.
