With Game of Thrones ineligible for this year’s Emmys, there was a tie for the most-nominated show among Thursday’s Emmy nominations — and one of them was from HBO, too.
Freshman Westworld and Saturday Night Live led the pack with 22 noms each, with NBC’s variety show growing its record haul to a total of 231 following a season packed with election sketches. Rounding out the top three are FX anthology Feud: Bette and Joan and Netflix’s 1980s sci-fi drama Stranger Things with 18 apiece and last year’s outstanding comedy winner Veep coming in third with 17 nominations.
On the network side, even without Game of Thrones, HBO still led the field — and grew its sum from last year’s 94 to 110 on the backs of Westworld, Veep, Big Little Lies, The Night Of, Silicon Valley and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, among others. Netflix went from third a year ago to second, jumping from 56 to 91 due in part to the watercooler hit Stranger Things. Thanks to freshman breakout This Is Us, NBC rocketed from fourth a year ago to third, growing from 41 to 60 this season. And FX Networks, which was down only two, fell to fourth with 54. (Here’s last year’s list for reference.)
