Jeffrey Tambor and Jill Soloway both spoke out about transgender issues during their Emmys acceptance speeches on Sunday.
Tambor nabbed the prize for lead actor in a comedy for his role as transgender woman Maura Pfefferman in Amazon’s Transparent, while the show’s creator, Soloway, won the Emmy for comedy series directing.
Soloway pointed out that someone close to her named Carrie “could tomorrow go and try to find an apartment, and in 32 states, it would be legal for the landlord to look her in the eye and say, ‘We don’t rent to trans people.’ “
“We don’t have a trans tipping point yet — we have a trans civil rights problem, so go to TransEquality.org and vote to pass the Trans Equality Bill,” she continued.
Tambor pointed out during his speech that he was dedicating his “performance and this award to the transgender community.”
“Thank you for your patience, thank you for your courage, thank you for your stories, thank you for your inspiration, thank you for letting us be part of the change,” the actor said.

In his category, Tambor topped Louis C.K. (Louie), Don Cheadle (House of Lies), Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth), Matt LeBlanc (Episodes) and William H. Macy (Shameless).
This marks Tambor’s first Emmy victory following six previous losses for supporting actor in a comedy series: the first four for his role on HBO’s The Larry Sanders Show, followed by two for Fox’s Arrested Development.
Tambor won the Golden Globe for best actor in a musical or comedy TV series in January for Transparent.
The 67th annual Primetime Emmy Awards was hosted by Andy Samberg and held at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater on Sunday.
