AMC is taking a bite out of the burger wars.
The network is currently developing a script for Fast Boys, a comedy about the birth of the fast food industry — or, simply, the great American hamburger boom. The period half-hour, set in post-World War II San Bernardino, Calif., is said to have shades of There Will be Blood and early Tim Burton-esque Americana.
Fast Boys is likely to be among the new entries in contention for a pilot pickup at the network’s annual round of producer meetings this spring. AMC execs have been vocal about the network’s desire to expand into the comedy space, but it has yet to land the right one. Producers of Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul abandoned the half-hour comedy format early in the development process, and AMC brass recently passed on another period comedy, We Hate Paul Revere.
For its part, Fast Boys is the brainchild of relative newcomer Anthony Pucillo, who previously worked for The Usual Suspects‘ Chris McQuarrie and onetime HBO exec Carolyn Strauss. He will produce the entry, too, alongside his management company Black Box. This marks the second half-hour cable sale for the latter, which sold a Tone Bell-Mark Agee comedy to FX in October.
Pucillo is also repped by CAA and Hirsch Wallerstein.
