Annie Potts is heading south.
The Designing Women alum has been tapped to co-star in ABC’s Fortune Feimster semi-autobiographical comedy pilot Family Fortune, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The multicamera entry centers on a popular gym teacher (comedian Feimster) in North Carolina who comes out of the closet to her close-knit group of family and friends. What she doesn’t realize is that she will have to deal with her bickering and happily divorced parents also “coming out” about their sleeping together.

Potts will play Feimster’s mother, Ginger, a classic Southern belle who is attractive and fun-loving but also needy and, at times, ?egomaniacal. Fortune often finds herself having to be the ?responsible one in their relationship. Ginger, divorced from Fortune’s father for 10 years, is on a relentless quest to find love and be loved, but the choices she makes in this pursuit often blow up in her face. Ginger is initially thrown by her daughter’s revelation that she is gay but then fully embraces her and gay culture.
Feimster will pen the pilot alongside 30 Rock and Cabot College‘s Matt Hubbard. Robert Carlock, Tina Fey and David Miner will exec produce the Universal Television and 3 Arts comedy. Feimster will co-exec produce.
For Potts, the role marks her latest gig at ABC, where she previously co-starred on GCB and two years ago, appeared in the pilot Murder in Manhattan. She’s repped by Innovative, Untitled and Myman Greenspan.
