Fox is adding to its comedy pilot haul with a pair of workplace entries.
The network on Monday handed out pickups to single-camera comedies Type A and L.A. to Vegas, both produced by studio counterpart 20th Century Fox Television.
Type A reunites Life in Pieces duo Lesley Wake Webster, who will pen the script, with Jason Winer, who will direct. The project is based on Aaron James’ book Assholes: A Theory and is described as an office comedy about a group of consultants hand-picked to do the dirty work most professionals can’t handle like layoffs and downsizing — basically generally delivering horrible news. To everyone else, they’re the enemy, but to each other, they’re family. James will consult on the pilot.
The comedy hails from Winer’s 20th TV-based Small Dog Picture Co. and marks his latest effort for the studio after ABC’s Modern Family and CBS’ Life in Pieces. Type A landed at Fox in October with a penalty attached.
L.A. to Vegas, meanwhile, is an ensemble workplace comedy about a group of underdogs trying to find their place in the world that is set on the Friday night flight from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and the returning flight on Sunday and who all share the same goal: to come back a winner in the casino of life.
Lon Zimmet (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Happy Endings) will pen the script and executive produce alongside Gary Sanchez Productions’ Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Chris Henchy.
Workplace comedies have becomes one of the breakout trends this pilot season (NBC’s Spaced Out, untitled Seth Meyers/Mike O’Brien project) as broadcast networks look for new takes on the tried and true format.
