Fox has picked up a script for Far From the Tree, a character-based thriller focusing on the family of a terrorist, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
From Switched at Birth executive producer Becky Hartman Edwards and Gangster Squad director Ruben Fleischer, the drama will concentrate on the family members whose lives are turned upside down when their eldest son is involved in a large-scale eco-terrorism attack. The show centers on the parents and siblings of the eco-terrorist as they deal with the FBI, media and community at large, all while unraveling the complex mystery of how and why one of their own became so radicalized.
Hartman Edwards (Parenthood, The Larry Sanders Show, Sex and the City, American Dreams) will pen the script and executive produce the drama alongside Fleischer for 20th Century Fox Television, where the latter is under an overall deal.
This marks Fleischer’s second sale during this development season. He’s also teaming with How to Make It in America creator Ian Edelman for Fox comedy F.O.M.O. (Fear of Missing Out). Repped by UTA and Sloane Offer, Fleischer is currently producing the feature Two Night Stand. His credits also include directing Zombieland and 30 Minutes or Less.
Fleischer had four projects set up at Fox and ABC last year. Of those, only Fox’s The List moved to pilot. (Fox passed on the Michael Pena drama in May.)
Hartman Edwards is repped by UTA and Del Shaw. Her credits include October Road and Life on Mars. ABC Family’s Switched at Birth, where she has been a writer and EP, will return for a third season in January.
