Fox International Channels will partner with the China-based New Classics Media for broadcast and distribution rights outside of mainland China on the family comedy-drama series Tiger Mom.
The move marks FIC Asia’s first collaboration on a TV series produced in mainland China as well as the most comprehensive partnership with a China-based media corporation that FIC Asia has embarked on to date, the company said in a statement.
The concept of the “tiger mom” became popular after Amy Chua‘s book The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, which argued for a strict approach to child-rearing.
Tiger Mom follows the adventures of a set of parents after their daughter starts school and centers on the family’s tough-love Asian mother, who has extremely high expectations for her children.
The show stars Zhao Wei and Tong Dawei, both actors well known in China and overseas amongst Chinese-content fans.
The series will launch on STAR Chinese Channel (SCC), FIC’s leading Chinese entertainment channel, in various territories around the world at the same time as in mainland China.
The deal will give Tiger Mom access to markets worldwide, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, Japan, Korea, Australasia, Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, and Africa.
“It is our goal at FIC to bridge the gap between great Chinese content and the clear demand for it around the world,” said Cora Yim, senior vp of the Chinese Channels Group at FOX International Channels Asia.
“We have been steadily investing in Asian and Chinese channels and content for over two decades, so we are in a great position to lead the charge in catering to this demand.”
