The Mindy Project‘s abbreviated third season won’t be so abbreviated after all.
Fox announced Friday that it has picked up an additional six episodes of the Mindy Kaling vehicle, bringing its count to 21 episodes for the season. The softer performing half-hour, which partners with New Girl on Tuesday nights, previously only earned a 15-episode season from former Fox boss Kevin Reilly before his June departure.
The Mindy Project has achieved a bit of cult status since premiering in 2012. Though never a ratings juggernaut, it has courted critics — more-so after the first season thanks to some creative rejiggering. It also continues to give Fox the boon of being home to Kaling’s high profile.
Season-to-date, The Mindy Project is averaging a 1.6 rating among adults 18-49 and 3.1 million viewers after time-shifting. It also performs especially well in its core audience of women 18-34.
Fox’s midseason comedy bench isn’t exactly deep. The only new half-hours slated for the rest of the year, Weird Loners and Will Forte starrer The Last Man on Earth, are only six-episode runs. Elsewhere in Fox comedy, the network’s abbreviated order for Mulaney will continue to air on Sundays — but at the earlier time slot of 7:30 p.m. ET.
The Mindy Project is produced by Universal Television.
