Fox is getting a very early jump on its lineup for the 2021-22 TV season.
The network has given a series order to This Country, a single-camera mockumentary from creator Jenny Bicks (Sex and the City, The Big C) and director Paul Feig (A Simple Favor, The Office). It’s based on a BAFTA-winning BBC series created by and starring Daisy and Charlie Cooper.
Lionsgate TV, where Bicks and Feig both have overall deals, is producing the series with BBC Studios’ Los Angeles production arm, Feigco Entertainment and Fox Entertainment. The show centers on two cousins, played Chelsea Holmes and Sam Straley, who are followed by documentary crew in their hometown.
“Fueled by Jenny and Paul’s imaginative wit and distinct comedic voices, we knew This Country was a special project from the moment we heard their pitch,” said Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn. “As we curate Fox’s comedy brand, it is important to align ourselves with pedigree talent and dynamic partners with proven track records. In Jenny, Paul, Lionsgate and BBC Studios, we have the perfect team to help us do just that.”
Holmes and Straley (ABC’s The Kids Are Alright) will play cousins Kelly and Shrub Mallet, who are followed by a film crew documenting the daily lives and concerns of young adults. The cast also includes Seann William Scott (Fox’s Lethal Weapon), Aya Cash (You’re the Worst, The Boys), Taylor Ortega (Kim Possible), YouTuber Krystal Smith and Justin Linville.
“Jenny and I are so excited to bring this amazing series to the American public,” said Feig. We have assembled a cast of comedic superstars who have taken the hilarious groundwork laid by Daisy and Charlie Cooper and made it their own. We can’t thank Charlie Collier, Michael Thorn and Julia Franz enough for making this comedy dream come true.”
This Country earned a pilot order in January as part of Fox’s development slate for the 2020-21 season. The coronavirus pandemic pushed production on most pilots out of their usual spring window. Fox ended up ordering only one new live-action series, multi-camera comedy Call Me Kat, for the current season.
With the pickup of This Country, Fox now has three scripted series penciled in for 2021-22. The network recently renewed its animated stalwarts Bob’s Burgers and Family Guy through 2022-23.
Bicks, Feig, Angie Stephenson of BBC Studios, Charlie Cooper and Daisy Cooper executive produce. Feigco’s Dan Magnante will co-executive produce, and Cathy Mason and Rachel Mason are producers.
