Fox truly cannot get enough of music. The network has ordered its fourth series in the genre, slating a revival of Name That Tune for January.
For those not familiar with the format, the one-hour game show tests contestants’ music knowledge in an assortment of challenges — like an old-school Beat Shazam. 30 Rock star and Broadway vet Jane Krakowski will host the series, with American Idol‘s Randy Jackson serving as the band leader.
“We’re thrilled to bring the iconic musical game show Name That Tune back to television with this updated revival,” said Fox Entertainment president of alternative entertainment and specials Rob Wade. “It’s been beloved the world over for decades, and we can’t wait for a new generation of families to get to play along with the classic series at home. With the captivating Jane Krakowski as host alongside band leader Randy Jackson the Big Dawg himself, this surely will be a harmonious pairing.”
The network is pairing the show with flagship The Masked Singer, premiering it out of the latter’s fifth-season launch on Jan. 6. Created by Harr Salter, the original Name That Tune began as a radio program in 1952, crossing over to television the following year and airing in various incarnations through 1985.
It makes sense that Fox would continue to explore the unscripted music space. The Masked Singer has been a ratings boon to the broadcast network. And with fewer original offerings on the dial during the COVID-19 pandemic, unscripted efforts are more appealing than ever. Recent Fox launch I Can See Your Voice has proven to be a solid enough partner with the current fall cycle of The Masked Singer.
The new Name That Tune is being produced by in-house studio Fox Alternative Entertainment, Prestige Entertainment and Eureka Productions.
