For broadcast networks not airing the Primetime Emmys in a given year, the night of the show usually means airing either reruns or a special as counterprogramming.
Fox is going the latter route this year, with a special about as far removed from a glitzy celebration of the industry as possible: a two-hour documentary about the Manson family.
Inside the Manson Cult: The Lost Tapes, will air at 8 p.m. ET/PT Monday, Sept. 17, opposite NBC’s Emmy broadcast. The special will feature footage from the Manson family compound at Spahn Ranch that “shows — in real time — how the cult members were brainwashed under Manson’s influence,” according to executive producer Simon Andreae.
“The Manson murders are some of history’s most shocking and grisly crimes,” said Rob Wade, president alternative entertainment and specials at Fox. “The Lost Tapes offers incredible insight into how such unsuspecting people fell under Manson’s demonic spell and how so many of them committed such heinous acts.”
The documentary, narrated by Liev Schreiber, will also include what’s billed as an exclusive interview with Manson associate Bobby Beausoleil, who’s serving a life sentence for the murder of Gary Hinman in July 1969, two weeks before the infamous Manson family killing spree.
It will feature new and archival interviews with prosecutor Stephen Kay, FBI profiler John Douglas (whose book Mind Hunter is the basis for the Netflix series of the same name) and Manson family members Catherine “Gypsy” Share and Dianne “Snake” Lake.
Inside the Manson Cult: The Lost Tapes comes from Naked Television and is executive produced by Andreae, Hugh Ballantyne, Richard Dale, Allan Gaba and Dean Egnater.
