Monumental, Fox’ co-production partner in Russia, will produce its first English-language television series for the global market, based on Sergei Lukyanenko’s post-apocalyptic zombie bestseller Quazi.
Lukyanenko is best known outside Russia as the author of the Night Watch/Day Watch fantasy thriller novels, adapted into a hit film franchise by Russian director Timur Bekmambetov.
Quazi is set in a post-apocalyptic Earth overrun by the Risen Dead. A small group of evolved, intelligent zombies, called the Quazi, form a fragile alliance with the remaining humans surviving within fortress city-states. When a sinister murder threatens the balance of power, a human detective must form an uneasy partnership with a Quazi agent to investigate.
Monumental said the project is in late development, with talent currently being attached.
“Sergei Lukyanenko and his book were pivotal not only for me and Monumental but also for the Russian film industry,” said Monumental partner Michael Schlicht in a statement.
Monumental is one of Russia’s leading film production companies, with credits including Stalingrad, Battalion and Vysotsky. Thank You For Being Alive.
Schlicht and fellow Monumental principle Paul Heth developed and produced films in Russia under Monumental’s joint venture with Sony from 2000-2011 and had a development and co-production deal with Sony Pictures from 2011-2015. Since 2015, Monumental has had a similar agreement with Twentieth Century Fox.
