A revival of Frasier that has been kicking around for several years is taking another small step to becoming reality.
Sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter that a revival of the beloved, Emmy-winning comedy is under consideration at Paramount+, the successor to CBS All Access that’s set to launch in March.
Paramount+ and CBS Studios, which would produce the show, declined comment.
Sources stressed that it’s still very early in the process, and no deals of any kind are done. That would be in keeping with previous news about a potential Frasier revival, which first surfaced in July 2018. Star Kelsey Grammer was photographed carrying a binder with the word “Frasier” on it a few months later.
Frasier, a spinoff of Cheers, ran from 1993-2004 on NBC and amassed 37 Emmy wins during its time, including five consecutive best comedy series trophies beginning in 1994. The series currently streams on CBS All Access as well as Hulu and Peacock.
The 2004 series finale had Grammer’s Frasier Crane leaving Seattle for Chicago, where he had followed his girlfriend, Charlotte (Laura Linney), in hopes of reuniting with her. Other members of his family moved into new phases of their own lives. The hope for a revival would be to reunite Grammer and the surviving core cast of the original series: David Hyde Pierce’s Niles, Peri Gilpin’s Roz and Jane Leeves’ Daphne. (John Mahoney, who played Frasier and Nile’s father, Martin, died in 2018.)
Grammer, meanwhile, is set to star opposite Alec Baldwin, in an ABC comedy from Modern Family co-creator (and Frasier veteran) Christopher Lloyd and Vali Chandrasekaran. The show received a straight to series order at the network and is slated for the 2021-22 season.
