The CW likes its remakes.
The younger-skewing network is prepping a Friday the 13th TV series, CW president Mark Pedowitz confirmed Tuesday at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour.
The horror/crime thriller would revive famed serial killer Jason Vorhees and hails from The Pretender creators Steve Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle, who will pen the script. The duo will exec produce the CBS Television Studios entry alongside Sean Cunningham, Randall Emmett, George Furla and Mark Canton.
The films have spawned more than 10 features since the franchise’s debut in 1980.
The CW’s Friday the 13th series, which is in early development, comes as the network has been pushing further into horror fare. The CW most recently went to pilot with an episodic anthology based on Tales From the Darkside that did not move forward.
Thus far this development season, Pedowitz has been all about intellectual property with The Notebook also in early development. Additionally, Pedowitz confirmed that The CW is adapting 2000 sci-fi feature Frequency with Supernatural boss Jeremy Carver. The latter was previously developed for NBC last season but did not make the pilot cut at the network. Frequency, meanwhile, was described as a combination of a follow-up sequel to the movie mixed with a reboot/retelling. “Jeremy Carver is the writer and he’s starting to tell the story and is going to try and push past the movie a little bit to where the next phase is,” Pedowitz said.
Not to be outdone, The CW is also teaming with The Flash/Arrow/Legends of Tomorrow’s Greg Berlanti for a new take on Archie Comics with Riverdale, which moved over after being initially developed at Fox.
