ABC is making another big bet on family comedy.
The network has made a pilot order plus penalty for the Greg Malins comedy, titled Tribes, adapted from the Israeli effort Your Family or Mine.
The project centers on Oliver and Kelli, who if they weren’t aware of the adage “When you marry someone, you don’t just marry them, you marry their whole family” before they were married, they are now. Each episode will focus on a different side of the family: one week featuring the couple dealing with Kelli’s family, the next spent with Oliver’s.
The half-hour multicamera entry, set up at Sony Pictures Television-based Fanfare, will be written and executive produced by Malins (Friends, Will & Grace). Keshet’s Avi Nir and Ran Telem will serve as executive producers along with creators Rubi Duanias and Yaniv Polishuk. Tamira Yardeni is also on board as EP.
Tribes marks a growing interest in Israeli fare, following the recent breakout success of Emmy darling Homeland, another Keshet product. Other transports include HBO’s In Treatment, Fox’s short-lived Traffic Light and CBS’ summer reality series 3.
Malins, whose other credits include How I Met Your Mother and 2 Broke Girls, is repped by WME.
