FX is adding another high-profile limited series to its development coffers.
The cable network is developing Mohicans, an adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper‘s classic The Last of the Mohicans, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.
STORY: The ‘Bible’ Effect and the Resurrection of the TV Miniseries
Chris Crowe, who co-wrote the screenplay for the 1992 Daniel Day-Lewis feature, is onboard to pen the script alongside Kerry McCluggage (Miami Vice) and Stephen Beck, who are co-developing the project. Crowe and McCluggage will executive produce, while Beck will serve as a producer.
The FX project is described as the story of America’s beginnings as a nation as told through the eyes of Cooper’s classic characters from the historical novel The Last of the Mohicans. The novel was first published in 1826. The feature film grossed an estimated $75 million domestically.
STORY: FX Orders ‘Fargo’ Limited Series from Coen Brothers, Noah Hawley
For FX, Mohicans joins a robust slate of limited series in development. The cabler is also prepping Conquistadors, a mini based on the book Last Days of the Incas, as well as Mayflower, from Paul Giamatti; Grand Hotel, from Sam Mendes; Mad Dogs, based on the British series and adapted by Shawn Ryan; Sutton, based on J.R. Moehringer‘s novel and adapted by Alexander Payne; and Stephen Gaghan‘s six-part Vietnam War entry They Marched Into Sunlight.
FX has already given series orders to limited series Fargo, from the Coen Brothers and Noah Hawley, with an eye on launching that in its next fiscal year. FX Networks CEO John Landgraf told reporters in early June that it is looking to launch two limited event series in the fiscal year following Fargo. The ramped-up limited series push comes as FX is launching younger-skewing cable network FXX in September and rebranding FXM for the 25-54 demo, the latter possibly airing one of the event series.
Kaplan-Stahler Agency repped Crowe, McCluggage and Beck and packaged the project.
