FX is moving forward with its planned Donald Glover comedy. FX Networks announced Friday that it’s given a pilot order to Atlanta, a half-hour that the former Community star has been developing since 2013.
Atlanta finds Glover serving as executive producer alongside Paul Simms and Dianne McGunigle of Schiff Company. (FX Productions is producing the pilot.) Glover also will star as one half of the central duo: two cousins, with wildly different takes on life, navigating the Atlanta rap scene. Glover plays Earnest “Earn” Marks, a college drop-out who taps into his own musical aspirations when his estranged family member finds sudden fame.
“Donald Glover is a uniquely talented actor and performer who brings real-life experience to this subject matter,” said FX Networks and FX Productions president of original programming Nick Grad, who made the announcement with counterpart Eric Schrier. “Not only is Donald a very gifted actor, he has achieved tremendous success and acclaim as the musical artist Childish Gambino. He, along with Paul Simms, has a very honest, sometimes serious, and funny perspective on life, the world of rap music and the city of Atlanta.”
Glover, best known for his musical work and his time on Community, also served as a writer on 30 Rock. He just received his first Grammy nomination last week for best rap album and best rap performance.
Atlanta is the fourth comedy series pilot produced or ordered by FX Networks this year.
