The network has officially renewed comedy Wilfred for a third season.

The series about a pot-smoking dog (Jason Gann) who appears as a human in a dog costume to Elijah Wood‘s Ryan will be back, a renewal FX president John Landgraf was poised to announce at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour.
Showrunner David Zuckerman, who adapted the series, will step down and be replaced by writer-EPs Reed Agnew and Eli Jorne, who served as writers on Wilfred‘s first two seasons. Zuckerman will continue on as an exec producer but turn over day-to-day duties to Jorne and Agnew.
“As John (Landgraf) said at the summer TCA, it was only a matter of time before we picked up the show, we just had to work some things out,” FX exec vp original programming Nick Grad said. “David Zuckerman has done an amazing job adapting and reconceiving Wilfred for FX. It was his decision to step down from the showrunner’s post, but we’re very happy he is going to stay involved with the show. Both we and David have great faith in the ability of Reed and Eli to seamlessly step up and take over the reins. I have no doubt they’ll do a great job.”
The comedy — which joins Louie, The League and Archer — averaged a 1.1 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and about 1.16 million total viewers. The sophomore comedy’s median viewer age hovers around 36.
The philosophical comedy, which this season has featured Smallville‘s Allison Mack recurring as a love interest for Ryan, has already eclipsed the Australian series on which it’s based. Fiona Gubelmann and Dorian Brown co-star.
The WIlfred renewal follows FX’s 90-episode back-order for Charlie Sheen‘s Anger Management.
